Among the renowned stone gardens throughout history, only one has survived to this day: the Lion Garden in Suzhou. It was built in 1342 during the Yuan Dynasty by the Zen Buddhist monk Wen Tianru in memory of his teacher, Abbot Zhongfeng. At the time, the garden was part of the Bodhi Orthodox Monastery. The garden's name comes from the lion-shaped taihu stones, constructed to reference the symbolic lion in the Lion's Roar Sutra.
